Operations/Training

As Winston Churchill once said, “to improve is to change; to be perfect is to change often.” There are always opportunities to improve processes to yield greater efficiencies. One of the best ways to justify changes to existing business processes is to create a business case for the proposed solution.

HSE and Safety

You may already be aware of the benefits of active learning (AR/VR) versus passive learning (books/slide decks), but communicating with decision makers to show that this technology can better train employees, prevent injuries, and save lives is key for adoption.

FIVE STEPS:

Create a business case for your pitch

You may already have a particular process/procedure in mind that you’re looking to improve upon, so how do you make your pitch that the current method can be improved with AR/VR?

  1. Outline the time and costs involved in the current method of accomplishing the task/activity. (Ex: Training procedure, inspection process, maintenance activity, etc). This will serve as your baseline value to improve upon.

  2. List the estimated savings for solving the problem with AR/VR. Consider time savings and cost reductions to see how much of an impact the project would need to make for it to be viable in your organization. Success metrics like as “reduce inspection time required by 20%” or “reduce training costs by 15%” may be used as a launch point.

  3. Establish the cost and scope for a proof of concept. This is where we come in. We’ll work with you to determine what can be done, and come up with an estimate for a proof of concept (POC) and/or the full project. If the POC shows that the success metrics are attainable, the full project may be cleared for continuation.

  4. Before your internal pitch, it’s important to consider why the change in approach is beneficial for the company as a whole. Understanding the 70-20-10 framework and communicating this to stakeholders is a helpful key to secure buy-in.

  5. Even though it’s a preliminary pitch, by mentioning details like risks, limitations, and purchasing strategies for any necessary hardware shows that you’ve covered your bases in considering AR/VR to be a viable solution.
